Health & Genetics
The Kooikerhondje Society of America seeks to maintain and improve the health and well-being of this delightful little dog. We cooperated in establishing guidelines for Kooikers with the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC). The CHIC is a centralized canine health database jointly sponsored by the AKC/Canine Health Foundation (AKC/CHF) and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). It provides a resource for breeders and owners of purebred dogs to research and maintain information on the health issues prevalent in specific breeds. We encourage all breeders to test potential mates, ensuring the healthiest possible puppies.
Interested in Adding a Kooikerhondje to your Family?
The Kooikerhondje is a very rare breed. Finding a healthy, well-bred puppy or older dog will take time. Be prepared to wait as demand exceeds supply for puppies from health-checked parents. Don’t succumb to those who promise a puppy within a few weeks or even months lest you inadvertently support those who would exploit the breed. Contact our Breeder Referral for further information.
